Early morning on the shores of Lake Koronis, Paynesville.

There’s something profoundly special about returning to a place that feels like spiritual home, and for me, Red Rock Camp at Lake Koronis has always been just that. This past week was no exception—it was filled with joyful reunions, meaningful teaching, powerful worship, and the unmistakable presence of God.

One of the highlights of my week was leading a Bible study centered on the themes from my book, Bible and Battlefield. Sharing these insights with a group so eager to dig deeper into faith was incredibly energizing. We explored how the stories of perseverance, courage, and divine providence from the Civil War era still speak to our walk with Christ today. The group’s thoughtful questions and heartfelt responses reminded me once again that history and Scripture together can stir faith in powerful ways.

In addition to the Bible study, I had the joy of teaching on a few other topics throughout the week. It’s always a gift to encourage others in their spiritual journey, and I left every session feeling more inspired than when I walked in. From teaching others about communication as a leadership team to biblical archaeology, I thoroughly enjoyed every topic I was privileged to share with others. There’s a unique rhythm to camp life—one where time seems to slow down just enough to let meaningful conversations bloom and spiritual growth take root.

Perhaps my favorite rhythm, though, was the literal one. I had the honor of playing drums again with the worship band, a role that brings me such deep joy. There’s nothing quite like joining others in praise, letting each beat and chord become an offering. I was also able to lead worship on a few songs during the week, including Living Hope—a moment that felt especially poignant. The lyrics, the voices lifted in unison, the lake glistening just beyond the tabernacle—it all came together as a beautiful expression of why we gather: to celebrate the hope we have in Christ. I do have to say, there were moments in worship where the volume of voices singing back to the worship team far outnumbered the number of people in worship - the Holy Spirt was moving!

This week also brought the blessing of spending time with our camp missionaries, Steve and Kelly Solheim from World Gospel Mission. I thoroughly enjoyed our one-on-one conversations, where I had the chance to hear their hearts, learn more about their ministry, and see the genuine love they carry for the people they serve in Honduras. Watching them interact with other campers, always joyful and full of grace, was a powerful reminder of what it looks like to be the hands and feet of Christ. Their witness was both encouraging and contagious. To follow the work that Steve and Kelly do, I encourage you to head on over to their Facebook page. Every week (at the very least!) they are updating their supporters and sharing the growing ministry they're heading up in La Esperanza, Honduras. If you feel led to give to their ministry, you can find their WGM profile here. Their latest newsletter can be viewed here.

Finally, having the time to slow down and spend time with friends (both from my home church and others) is something that I do not want to overlook. There is a different kind of fellowship that happens when we are at Red Rock Camp. Conversations, be they over a game of Swipe or a cup of coffee, tend to go longer and dig a bit deeper than usual. Hob knobbing late into the evenings (one night when until 1:30 am!) and talking about life and faith is something I truly cherish.

This week reminded me of the richness found in community—how teaching, worship, and even shared meals can point us toward the heart of God. I’m coming home with a full heart, a refreshed spirit, and a deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve and be served in such a sacred place.

Until next year, Red Rock.
